What is GSM?
GSM means grams per square metre: how much one square metre of the paper weighs. The higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the paper.
- 60–80 GSM: office paper, letterheads, books
- 100–130 GSM: flyers, leaflets, posters
- 170–250 GSM: brochure covers, folders
- 300–350 GSM: visiting cards, hang tags
Weight of one sheet = GSM × width (m) × height (m). For example, A4 is 0.21 × 0.297 = 0.06237 m², so one 80 GSM sheet weighs 4.99 g and a ream of 500 sheets weighs about 2.5 kg.

How much does a ream of A4 80 GSM paper weigh?
One A4 sheet is 0.06237 m², so at 80 GSM it weighs 4.99 g. A ream of 500 sheets weighs about 2.5 kg (2.495 kg).
How do I work out the weight of a Double Demy ream?
Multiply the GSM by the sheet area in square metres. A 23 × 36 inch Double Demy sheet is 0.5842 × 0.9144 m = 0.5342 m². At 80 GSM one sheet weighs 42.7 g, so a ream of 500 weighs about 21.4 kg.
How do I convert a price per kg into a price per sheet?
Price per sheet = price per kg × sheet weight in grams ÷ 1000. For example, at ৳120 per kg, an 80 GSM Demy sheet (21.37 g) costs about ৳2.56, so a ream of 500 costs about ৳1,282.
What GSM should I use for a visiting card, flyer or poster?
Visiting cards usually use 300–350 GSM card. Flyers and leaflets use 100–130 GSM, posters 100–150 GSM, brochure covers 170–250 GSM, and office or book paper 70–80 GSM.
Is a ream always 500 sheets?
Most printing and office paper comes in reams of 500 sheets, but some card and special paper is packed in 100, 125 or 250 sheets. Change "Sheets in a ream" to match your packet.
Why is my real ream a little lighter or heavier?
Mills allow a small GSM tolerance (often ±3–5%), and local sheet sizes can differ slightly from the standard. Use the result as a close estimate and weigh a ream if you need the exact figure.
