FAQ
Why are there two different character counts for Bangla?
Computers store Bangla as separate code points: কি is ক plus the ি sign, and ক্ষ is ক, the hasant and ষ. “Characters” counts those code points, which is what most websites and form limits use. “Letters as seen” counts what a reader sees as one letter, so কি and ক্ষ each count as one.
How are words and sentences counted?
A word is any run of Bangla or English letters and digits, so “১২,৫০০.৫০” and “don't” are one word each. A sentence ends with a দাঁড়ি (।), a full stop, a question mark, an exclamation mark or a line break. A decimal point like 3.5 does not end a sentence.
How is the reading time worked out?
It assumes about 180 words a minute for Bangla and 230 for English when reading silently, and 110 and 140 when speaking, as in a speech or video voice-over. Real speed varies from person to person, so treat it as a guide.
Why does my Bangla SMS cost more than one message?
An SMS with only English letters holds 160 characters. As soon as it has a single Bangla letter it is sent as Unicode, which holds only 70 characters, and a longer message is split into parts of 67. The SMS line shows how many parts your text needs.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded: every count is worked out in your browser. Your last text is kept only in this browser so it's still there after a refresh, and “Clear” removes it.
